Plant Locally and Nurture Trees (PLANT)
| The major objective of the project
is to create awareness among the public, the importance of preserving indigenous
trees and biodiversity at large. The Society has two nursery sites
at Debrebirhan Teachers' Training Institute and Shoa Robit in which assorted
indigenous tree seedlings are produced and distributed to the communities
and peasant associations to be planted by the same for establishment of
family woodlots. The tree seedlings include Cordia Africana, Acacia
nilotica, Olea Africana, Prunus africanus, Hagenia abyssinica, Juniperus
procera, Milletia ferruginea and Podocarpus falcatus. |

Impacts

TTI teacher trainees have acquired the techniques of nursery establishment
through the EWNHS nursery sites. The trainees are now the focal target
for the Society in disseminating the nursery techniques to the farmers.

The farmers are aware of the importance of planting of indigenous trees.

The farmers established their own nursery sites about 10 km west of Debre
Birhan , Angolela, near the birth place of Menilk II. The community
nursery has a significant role among the farmers.

The farmers who were pondering in planting indigenous or exotics have now
decided in planting indigenous seedlings.
