Schools & Communities Environmental Education Project (SCEEP)

Mainly focuses on establishment of Environment Clubs and provision of technical and professional support to the same. The project promotes environmental activities such as organizing environmental education field trip to areas of environmental interest, establishment of nursery sites, production and planting of indigenous trees and production of school-based environmental publications.  The Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society has been promoting the project since 1992.

Beneficiaries of SCEEP

Since 1994 SCEEP has

•  Closely worked with seven National Regional States

•  Organized 21 Regional Environmental Education workshops for 345 teachers and other experts

•  Established/ strengthened/ built the capacity of 125 school's and 11 community EC's in Addis Ababa, 179 school's and 4 community EC's in seven regions and two farmers' conservation initiatives specifically at Dembecha and Holetta.

•  Initiated nursery establishment in schools and communities.

•  Distributed nursery tools, equipment and tree seeds to 22 Addis Ababa and 128 Regional schools and communities.

•  Initiated production of school and community-based environmental education magazines, newsletters, pamphlets, leaflets and brochures.

•  Initiated the celebration of World Environment Day (WED) in 22 Addis Ababa and 88 Regional schools and communities.

•  Established strong network with environmentally affiliated GOs, NGOs, school's and community's Nature Clubs in Addis Ababa and in regions as well.

•  Organized 4 Trainers Training Waste Management Workshops in urban centers.

        Beneficiaries:

    1. 161 teachers, community nature club leaders, experts from Bureaux of various Ministries, Zone and Districts community health workers.
    2. 7977 EC members benefited from 209 environmental education field trips.

Impacts
EC members:

  • Are aware of the fragility of the environment.
  • Are highly involved in environmental education and awareness creation programme in their vicinity.
  • Produce and distribute environmental information, through School and community-based Newsletters, Magazines, Pamphlets and Leaflets.
  • Celebrate environmental events through awareness creation and practical conservation practices in collaboration with the concerned GOs, NGOs and the communities at large
